Comments
Comments: Did the Whiteface-Passaconaway loop clockwise as recommended. Spent the first 2 miles basically running away from plentiful blackflies/mosquitos until we hit the steeper sections, at which point we accepted our fate. Bug net would have been helpful! Blueberry Ledge is dry and had no problems maneuvering up. Some blowdowns on Rollins but too distracted by the gorgeous views to have any issues :) Nearer to Passaconaway things started getting wet and muddy. Walden Trail up is wet rocks and a few scrambles with avoidable snow patches scattered - most from the Nor’easter have melted with temps and foot traffic and I wouldn’t expect it to stick around. Dicey’s Mill down involved stretches of wading through mud soup and some unavoidable snow on the steeper rocky part of the descent but very doable. Traction would not have been helpful because it is scattered among the rocks and wet/slushy. Just go slow and enjoy the last dregs of winter. Poles were helpful here. Took Dicey’s Mill all the way back down, water crossing is fine with the large stable log across, but I went back to help my partner and basically waded so that is also an option if you don’t mind wet boots for the last couple miles. Partner has knee issues and did find the crossing challenging as something to have to do at the end of the hike. Overall a beautiful loop with tons to love especially if you can catch the combo of dry ledges to monkey around on up to Whiteface and picturesque snow amongst the rocks on Passaconaway. Saw a few other hikers who we enjoyed chatting with.
