Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, May 27, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of room in the large Lincoln Woods lot at 9:00AM. This is a fee lot. It appeared that the restroom facility was closed. There are five porta-potties at the lot. The ranger building was closed.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No significant crossing except the East Branch on a bridge
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Many downed trees on the Osseo Trail and Franconia Ridge Trail. The tree falls start just before the first rock staircase when the Osseo leaves the valley to ascend the ridge. None of the tree falls are difficult to get by. The wet/muddy stretch on the Osseo Trail above the stairs could use either some stepping stones or more bog bridges as it is almost always messy in this spot.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. There is not much water on this route.
Bugs
Bugs: Slightly bothersome in a few locations. Overall, I was surprised by the lack of bugs. Did not use head net.

Comments
Comments: Most of the distance was on dry trails. The worst mud is on the Osseo Trail just above the stairs. This flat section is frequently muddy with standing water. There was also some mud between the peaks that wasn't too bad. No snow or ice on the trails. Saw some snow off the trail. But not much.
The wood stairs on the Osseo Trail are holding up well. One set of stairs in the lowest section has a steeper pitch than the other stair sections.
There are many rock stairs on the switchbacks on the Osseo to preserve the pathway.
Great views from the summits and the two outlooks by the stairs on the Osseo Trail. The snowy Presidential Range was visible over the Bonds and Guyot. Lafayette and Lincoln had a bit of snow.
Low on the Osseo Trail there are Lady's Slipper, Starflower, and Bluebead Lily in bloom. Up by the stairs the Rhodora flowers are emerging but not fully in bloom. There are lots of Painted Trillium and Shadbush flowering by the stairs.
I saw no other hikers on the Lincoln Woods and Osseo trails. There were many hikers on the Franconia Ridge Trail.
