Comments
Comments: Tough day in the Whites. Wet trails down low with very light drizzle. standing and runnning water on flatter trail sections. As described above, the Clay Brook water crossing was a disaster going in. I attempted to cross a wet log, lost my balance, log was too high and water was too deep for my trekking pole to reach. I fell in ass over tea kettle soaking everything from the waist down. Once I got to the Jefferson Notch Road I dumped boots, striped down and rung everything out and added some neoprene toe covers for extra warmth and continued on. My phone was in my pocket and got wet and I lost use of Caltopo for route following and progress monitoring. Views remained socked in until past the third cap on the way down. Had to break out the shell mittens and wool balaclava today. Ice and light snow above 4,600 ft. Windy with stinging sleet towards the summit and until back on Caps Ridge going down. After reaching the summit I attempted to orient myself with trail signs and my paper map. My original goal was to return via the Jewel Trail. Trail signs were covered in ice on the Gulf Side trail and I mistook the Cornice Trail for the Jewel - way too optimistic. Coming down Caps Ridge required careful foot placement and use of handholds. I wised up for the return crossing of Clay Brook, this time I put on spikes and successfully rock hoped across - whew! All in all, a great adventure/misadventure securing my #41 of 48 and enjoying a safe tour of a Terrifying 25 Trail.
