Peaks Mt. Hayes, NH
Trails
Trails: Centennial Trail, Mahoosuc Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, June 1, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Hogan Rd. (or at least the 0.2 miles of it west of North Rd. that I drove on) has deep potholes, but an ordinary car should be able to manage it. There is a small stream cutting across the road just east of Centennial Trailhead. There is parking at the corner of North and Hogan, a very small pull-off parking area just east of Centennial Trailhead (just before the small stream just mentioned), and parking at the Centennial Trailhead.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The streams are small, and all within the first mile or so of Centennial Trail. One or two had a lot of water flowing today, but still, rock hopping was not too difficult.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trails are well blazed, easy to follow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: OK for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitos are swarming at Centennial Trailhead, but only there - after hiking a few hundred feet up the trail, there were almost none. Didn't see any black flies.

Comments
Comments: A local I encountered who had hiked Centennial Trail many times told me that he'd never seen it so wet in 20 years, even in seasons of melting snow. There were MANY sections of significant mud, running water along the trail, and large pools of standing water blocking the trail. There were many times when we had no choice but to walk along the edges of the trail, even though I don't like to cause further erosion, widening the muddy trail like that.

There was one small wet slab on Centennial Trail just below the east peak of Mt. Hayes that required care to traverse safely because it was wet and sloping.

It is very much worth descending from the Centennial-Mahoosuc junction 0.5 miles southwest along Mahoosuc Trail to the wide open ledges with views. (Note: We almost missed seeing these ledges, because a few hundred feet before reaching them there is another side path left to a smaller ledge with partial views that we initially thought might be the viewpoint we had read about.)
