Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: After the previous days heavy rains, the water level was high today on the two big creek crossings this morning, but by the time we made it back to the creeks many hours later, the water level had dropped significantly. The first crossing is shortly after the parking lot, we were able to walk across the big logs using hiking poles very carefully. The 2nd crossing was around mile 2.5 and we crossed over the small tree logs laid across the creek the middle third of the creek and just barely above the water rocks. On the return trip, rocks were much more exposed and able to be hopped across at the second crossing and upon reaching the first crossing, we could rock hop across without going on the big log - much easier.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail was very muddy in the beginning. Hard to walk on sloped sides of the trail, so there was some walking through hobblebush patches. Further along, sections of trail that had standing water also had more rocks to help avoid puddles. All the small tributaries had rushing water, but easily crossed. Some sections of trail had water running down the trail and rocks. For the most part, the wet rocks weren't slippery, but we took our time and mostly stepped carefully from rock to rock instead of jumping. Some blowdowns higher up, but nothing hard to get around.

Bugs: None today as it was chilly with a gentle breeze.

Comments
Comments: At the parking lot, there is a sign for Galehead Hut 4.1 miles. The fitness trackers showed the hut to be more like 5.1 miles from the parking lot. This info is especially important when hiking with kids. At 4.1 miles, there was no hut to be found. Galehead Hut's bathrooms were open and they had water available outside, but the hut officially opens tomorrow. If it wasn't so muddy today, the first 4 miles would have been easy. The last mile to the hut is relentlessly steep with large rocks. Views are at the hut and then half way up Frost Trail is an outlook. The summit has a rock cairn, but is otherwise viewless. Happy Trails!
