 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Success Pond Road has many potholes but nothing too crazy. low clearance can drive this fine with caution. There were two very small sections where there is active beaver flooding now streaming across the road. |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Met Larry, the long term trail maintainer today and had a nice chat. He was clearing all the water bars and clearing all blowdowns-the trail is in about a good as shape as a single human could have it right now. That being said the upper section is a mud pit with failing bog bridges and water all over. Larry said he has been asking for bog bridges for 12 years to no avail. The mud pits on mahoosuc trail are DEEEEEEEP. Do not fall off one or you could go neck deep in spots. Larry informed me a pro trail crew is going to work on the mahoosuc trail all summer. There were three huge bundles of timber that had been heli-dropped right next to the summit as evidence of this being true! |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
I would definitely NOT take your dog to the plane crash site. The entire crash area is covered in jagged, sharp metal. Also, not sure if I would recommend Mahoosuc trail with those deep mud pits and wonky bog bridges. Swallow your dog right up! |

 | Bugs: |
NONE!!! quite brisk all day and the ridge was really breezy. Guessing tomorrow will be the beginning of the real bugpocalypse |

A glorious, bug-free day in early June! Was awesome to meet Larry the trail maintainer as noted above. Thanks for all the hard work, Larry! In case you have never done this hike, it is horrendously muddy in spots. Real gnarly. Do NOT skip the outlook loop-the views up there are truly magnificent! Someone has tied a rope to a small tree at the chimney scramble. Told the kiddos we would NOT be using it-totally unnecessary and just adds sketchiness in my opinion. We went to the plane crash site which was very interesting and somber. Crazy to imagine 5 of 7 people survived that. Definitely worth the extra effort. 39/52 for the boy...plugging away at it! Also-as noted in previous report there is still a grouse nest with 9 eggs two feet off the trail down low-please make sure your dogs don't mess with it! It is right below a white "Mt. Success" sign in the first mile. Also saw a snowshoe hare:) |
