 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Crossing of Garfield Stream at 2.2 miles was easy on rocks with some just below the water line.
The crossing at 0.1 miles is easiest on rocks a few steps upstream from the designated crossing.
All other crossings were easy even the flow is more robust than usual. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The signs at the junction of the Gale River and Garfield Ridge trails are on the ground by the post that once held them.
The evergreen boughs on the North Twin Spur near South Twin are crowding the trail.
Two good size evergreens had been cut on the Gale River Trail and the Twinway. All other tree falls were small and easy to get by. |

 | Comments: |
Lots of mud especially in the usual places on the North Twin Spur and down low on the Gale River Trail. Often, one can use rocks to avoid the worst of the mud. Most of the trails are dry.
The Galehead hut had a sign on the door indicating the hut was closed but that water was available and the toilets were open. I could see the croo inside working to get the hut prepared for the season. I met an AMC employee on my way down who indicated that the hut will be open in a day or two.
Lots of hikers out today including AT thru hikers, AT section hikers, 1-day Pemi Loopers, multi-day Pemi Loopers, and day hikers using various routes.
Some wildflowers: Lady's Slipper, Mayflower, Painted Trillium, Hobblebush, Bunchberry, and Bluebead Lily.
Great views from South Twin and North Twin. There is a fine view of the Franconia Range from Galehead if one walks on the herd path left of the summit cairn. |
