Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Liberty, NH
Trails
Trails: Liberty Spring Trail, Franconia Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, June 4, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Less than 10 cars at 9 AM, less than that at 4 PM. No parking fee which was surpising but frugally welcome. Personal note - I sure wish I'd been observant enough to see the 'Toilet' sign at the parking lot (a little to the right of the trailhead) BEFORE I started up, since it would have saved a poop-related detour higher up!
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One brook crossing shorty after departure from bike path with low water which made rock hopping easy, got away with only damp shoes thanks to my hiking pole-tripod-thing.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No detours up with the few fallen trees having been cleared some time ago. Trail to Little Haystack has a sizeable tree blocking trail within 100' of junction, I lost motivation for going back uphill to LH summit at this point so can't speak for remainder of trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A couple of Shepards arrived on the summit via the Flume trail, both were off-leash but with harnesses/attentive owners. The pooches' additional horse-power from their two extra legs sure made my paltry pair of legs jealous on the way back down.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies are out, but on the trail up/down they were surprisingly docile even during my several 5-plus minute breaks. On the summit they were more sociable but only bit me a few times despite me sitting in one place for 30 minutes.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: Trail wasn't very crowded up/down, a few people were doing the ridge loop and one intrepid guy doing the whole Pemi Loop. Met a small group in afternoon hiking over to Flume and the Osseo trail for camping, more power to them for slogging their heavy, multi-day packs. Unfortunately, the views on Liberty summit were crummy thanks to the Canadian wildfire haze - not enough to call smoke per-se but the barely noticeable odor and haze will probably get worse over the coming weeks.
