Signs are great! A few blazes may need refreshening. Major work was done last summer to reroute and rebuild a section of the Mt. Major Trail. Major thanks to the Society for the Protection of NH Forests and those who helped. |

Make sure you have water for them. And watch them on the steep sections. |

Wow, did we luck out! More butterflies than black flies. Never got a bite until we were almost back to the car. |

Hadn't been here in nearly 25 years. Plenty of new and lovely surprises. First of all, the huge paved lot. There is a large sheltered area in the middle of it. Kiosk is there. Plenty of outhouses, too. Hand sanitizer is out in some of them. Please respect the outhouses by not putting things in there that don't belong. I know it's not the folks who frequent New England Trail Conditions, but the others need to learn the difference between a urinal and a recycling bin.
Did this as a loop. Up Boulder Loop Trail. A few Lady Slippers here and there. A nice mix of flat areas, gradual ascent, and then a steep climb over rocks and boulders. Trail continued over the ridge-like summit. There are many subpaths, be careful to stay on the trail. A nice mix of pines and other trees. Since it was a hot afternoon, I spent a long time relaxing on the summit. Views were very hazy, but good. Descent was as I remembered it, until we got toward the bottom. Wow! What a surprise! A reroute with a new gravel path, boulders strategically placed, pavers for steps. Prema asked me why they did this. Looked it up later and read how much work the Society has done. You should definitely look it up (www.forestsociety.org).
Prior to this, there was major erosion in this area. By rerouting and changing the materials, they are preventing all this debris from ending up in Lake Winnipesauke. The parking lot project also prevents this, too. Once again, GREAT WORK! |
