Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Starr King Road has potholes that could swallow small cars. The few people living on that road certainly don't need to worry about people speeding out of the trailhead parking area, which has about a half dozen spots. When I got there at 7:30AM there was still space in the area closest to the trailhead for myself and two other vehicles.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A few small brooks, but nothing that requires any special equipment.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail fairies and gnomes have done God's work out there. The trail is passable all the way to Waumbek (though it looks like anyone seeking to go beyond Waumbek and towards Weeks may run into some blowdowns that have yet to be cleared). And whoever is doing the work should be thanked by everyone. They've done an exceptional job.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A couple of friendly dogs on the trail. The muddy conditions, especially almost immediately, clearly made them happy. (The owners who need to give them a thorough bath later? Verdict's out there.)
Bugs
Bugs: It's black fly season. 'Nuff said.

Comments
Comments: This was a simple enough hike today. Would've loved for it to not be as humid as it was, but it didn't rain so that's an achievement all by itself! The trail is clear with the typical muddy patches you'd expect at this time of year. Some soft spots between Starr King and Waumbek and a few lower down towards the trailhead. Anyone who's hiked up here regularly wouldn't bat an eye at them. But the mosquitoes and black flies do love that thick, soggy black mud! And unfortunately, there wasn't much of a breeze even at the top of Starr King, much less anywhere else, to do anything about them.
