Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing on Liberty Springs was shockingly easy after all the recent rain.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Decent amount of blowdowns on the ridge between Liberty Springs Trail and Little Haystack. They are building a new bridge over the bog by Greenleaf Hut. In the meanwhile there’s a board or two and a few rocks to get across.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Lots of happy puppers out today.
Bugs
Bugs: Amazingly the only significant bugs we encountered were black fly swarms on Flume summit. Zero bites all day with no bug nets or bug spray!

Comments
Comments: Beautiful day for a Franconia Ridge picnic with the kiddo. We stashed bikes in Tram lot by bike path and started hike from flume gorge lot. Only saw a few hikers and about a dozen single-day pemi loopers until we reached Haystack. From there to the hut it was conga line conditions, expected! The haze was intense and I felt the poor air quality on the climbs-was having a tough time with my breathing which had never happened before. Trails were not nearly as wet as expected, with the exception of Greenleaf below the hut. Had a delightful, mostly downhill bike ride back to the truck. We rang our bicycle bells at everyone we passed and got lots of smiles:) Ended up around 12 miles and 5500’ vert with a five mile joyride at the end. After five years of hiking Margaret was finally bestowed her trail name of “Badass”. Well deserved in my opinion!
