 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Tight parking at North Twin trailhead (end of Haystack Road) at 1100 on a (finally) sunny Sunday. Room for about 10-12 cars in the trailhead area. If those spots are full, you can park on the left (north) side of Haystack Road before or after the bridge over Little River. No parking on the right (south) side. |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Be prepared to get your feet wet if you're hiking this trail after a big rain event. We avoided first two water crossings by taking the well-established side trail to the left (east) side of the first water crossing. No avoiding the third crossing of Little River (about 2.2. miles in). Switched into crocks, jumped in and rock hopped south along the east bank for about 50 feet, then walked through shin-deep water for about 10 feet before rock hopping the rest of the way. Some of our party waded across further south of the trail crossing, where the water was slightly deeper but calmer. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail was in pretty good shape. Any blowdowns we saw had already been dealt with - kudos to the North Twin trail maintainers! |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
None seen. Water crossing would have been tough for smaller dogs. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Surprisingly, very few. |

We did this hike one-way to Galehead hut for an overnight prior to tackling the Bonds. Not surprisingly, after so much rain on Saturday, the North Twin Trail was super muddy during the section paralleling Little River. Once you start the climb up North Twin, it gets a bit drier. Last mile to top of North Twin is a little steeper, but nothing crazy. Beautiful views on the ledges just before the N Twin summit (which is a cairn in the trees a bit further on).
North Twin Spur to S. Twin has some rocks, ledges, mud, but great 360 views from the summit - which is also the trail intersection with Twinway.
Twinway down to Galehead hut: hope your quads are well-rested by this point...you're gonna need them for the 1000-foot descent over just 0.8 miles. It's rock city, but great views to Galehead Hut and Mountain if you take a minute to look up.
Frost Trail to Galehead is a quick (less than 45 minute) out and back from the hut. Summit is in the trees, but there's a lovely Southeast view point just short of the summit.
Hut is open for the season. Stop in to say hello to the Croo and snag some lemonade and chocolate chip cookie bars. |
