Comments
Comments: Overnighted at Galehead Hut - shout out to Croo member Ian for a great naturalist talk after dinner!
Climb from the hut back up South Twin was the hardest part of the day--1000 feet over 0.8 miles--but fortunately rocks were relatively dry. Once we hit the summit, we turned southeast for the moderate descent down Twinway towards Guyot. Several blowdowns in this section to watch out for, but great views towards Crawford Notch. Exposed section of the trail that cuts just south of Guyot summit (before junction with Bondcliff Trail) was windy and the bouldery trail here required attention to footing.
Bondcliff Trail pops back in the woods (and into the Pemi Wilderness) heading south. Water available at the Guyot Tentsite (east of trail) just before hitting the spur to West Bond--last water spot til you hit Black Brook. Saw a row of packs at the West Bond trail junction - other hikers left them there to do West Bond. Personally, I never like to be separated from my pack in the Whites--we carried ours on the 1-mile RT to West Bond.
We were worried about wind and possible rain on the exposed part of the trail from Bond to Bondcliff, but winds stayed moderate. Views from this above treelike section were amazing, even on this cloudy day. There's a big (about 10-foot) ledge drop just after Bondcliff summit, but after that the trail is relatively moderate headed down.
After Bondcliff summit, it's a LONG walk back to Lincoln Woods parking area (about 9 miles), but trails were in good shape, with just some mud in the lower sections of Bondcliff Trail near Black Brook - nothing boot-sucking deep.
Point-to-point, this took us 10.5 hours to cover 14.4 miles in good conditions.
