A fascinating twist on this peak for a moody overcast hazy Monday 4k. Old Osseo starts up into the woods, goes right of a comms building, crosses a brook and goes left at a yellow blazed cairn 4way jct, note to go right here on descent. Well blazed, easy climb until crossing the brook again then very muddy & swampy for awhile and then the vert begins. Its a gravely steep climb w/one moderate stretch up to the col followed by a very steep angling climb thru conifers up the south face of Whaleback. Pretty mossy ridge with so, so many blowdowns. Much nicer footing than actual osseo itself which is such a boring sloggy trail. Good views of many peaks tho franky ridge stayed mostly in the clouds for the day |
