Good overall. There are sone areas with gravel erosion/incising that could maybe use some stabilization for more environmental issues than hiker experience. |

Pretty straight forward up and back. I do think that various lists saying Hale is a good starter peak for the 4000 footers are not doing anyone a favor. That’s nothing against the mountain per se. It’s just really a peak-bagger destination for people checking off the 48 (like me…so not a criticism). Sure, it’s just 2.2 miles to the summit, but those miles are 1000’ elevation gain per mile for no view at the top. Most people new to the 4000 footers are not going to want to start with Hale when there are other mountains nearby that offer better views with less grade, even if they are longer walks (go for Pierce, Jackson or Waumbek to start your journey). The best feature of Hale is you can trail run parts of the last mile or so coming down (Weee!) |
