 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The gate was closed to Stub Hill Road off Smith Brook. I drove around to Haystack Mountain Road off Magalloway Road and rode my mountain bike up the rest of the way once the road got rough. You would need a serious lifted jeep with good tires to drive up it. I didn’t see any signs saying not to drive it, it was very muddy but doable on a mountain bike. Stub Hill Road is very bumpy, drivable but I’d prefer to bike it anyway. Same for the Diamond Ridge lookout. |

I’m not sure if biking this road means I cheated according to AMC rules but I don’t follow that anyway. I wouldn’t want to drive up Stub Hill Road any day, and biking was enjoyable. Parked on Haystack Mtn Rd at 2250’, and biked/walked up the rest, which I’d call a “jeep road”. The other roads are rough too, but not muddy. Once at the HOL I bushwhacked to North Stub first, it was pretty tough towards the top, like a maze trying to find a route through the thick firs. Found a rotting moose carcass. Back at the road, I took a wet path (marked on Gaia) for a bit, then bushwhacked South up Stub Hill, passing the pond. On the descent I found an actual trail, not on the map but it was flagged with tape, I should’ve taken it up, but then would’ve missed the pond. For Diamond Ridge peak I biked up to the lookout, then bushwhacked to the high point, there was only one report on this route from Liam and it looked tough but it turned out to be a good route, didn’t take long at all, a quick out and back the same way. I got a bunch of other peaks today too in the area, but no other issues with gates. I used my bike on many of the roads to save my vehicle though. |
