 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Tunnel Brook Road in good shape, enough parking for a half-dozen or so cars. Only one other there on this Monday. |
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
 | Recommended Equipment: |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
One significant stream crossing early on Benton. Water was average to low, but still challenging to find solid crossing without wading in. |
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Tunnel Brook section through the marsh could use a good clip-back. One downed tree on Benton that had been partially removed but still creates significant blockage. |
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
none seen, but it would be a good path, soft footing for much of the route. |
 | Bugs: |
mostly the get-in-your-eyes-and-ears kind, not biting, just obnoxious. Used some spray but probably didn't actually help. |

If you want a solitary trail up Moosilauke, this is your route. I saw one other person on the whole Benton trail (the owner of the one car parked next to mine). It's a long walk in verdant woods, not many views until you burst out onto the alpine zone. The footing is notably soft, duff more than rock, with only a few eroded sections up high. The ascent, once it starts, is consistent, getting steeper on the climb to the ridgeline, then more moderate but never flat, no PUDs. I wasn't thrilled with the stream crossing and chose a return route via bridges on Forest Road 170 (which parallels the Tunnel Brook trail) and then a short bushwhack through the woods to Tunnel Brook Road and the parking area. Lots of wildflowers along this route, including lupines! |
