Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Sunday Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Cross Rivendell Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, June 29, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked in the pull off at the end of Baker Rd. in Orford across from the private driveway. (When I returned it looked like Mt. Cube was having quite a day with visitors.)
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There are several small stream crossings on this route but none were an issue. Caution needed on stepping stones as they are mossy and slippery.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I don't recall any notable blowdowns. From Baker Rd. to NH 25A, the blazing is faded. The western part of this section has been opened up recently through the logged woods; the way is clear but is Tickville, Population: Billions (see below). From 25A over Sunday Mtn., the trail was just worked on by the Orford Conservation Commission and is in great shape; thank you! I did notice that the summit spur sign was missing. I thought there used to be one here? All junctions, logging road crossings, and notable turns have newer CRT signs.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Not sure I'd bring a dog out here with the tick situation (see below).
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes were out but the stars of the show were the many, many, many ticks between Baker Rd. and 25A, mainly in the logged section. I kept pulling ticks off my pants and have found over a dozen so far. Yuk!

Comments
Comments: I've been wanting to do this longer approach to Sunday Mtn. ever since I learned that local Orford resident and trail runner Chris G. was maintaining the section of Cross Rivendell Trail between Baker Rd. and NH 25A. Thank you, Chris! This approach adds about four miles round-trip to the hike.

It rained on the drive up so conditions were a bit wet to start but things were drying out quickly. Just a few very minor areas of mud here and there.

At the summit there are three bumps of similar size. The summit sign does not appear to be at the highest point. A herd path continues beyond the sign to a wooded ledge and cairn, which doesn't appear to be the high point either. From the summit sign, a third bump a short distance away to the N appears to be the true summit by my eye. But I didn't measure it!
