Comments
Comments: Cloudy day with thick air on the top of Carter Dome. Clouds were low before arriving at summit. These lifted as we walked down into Carter Notch. You could see Wildcat A from the notch.
Most of the day was spent walking on soft dirt since the area immediately south of Carter Notch is seldom visited. (although we did see a couple on Wild River Trail ) Both Wildcat River and Wild River trails were moderate walks up to the Rainbow TH.
Rainbow goes through steep rises followed by flatter sections, it also climbs through big scenic birch glades. These segments and the soft footing made for a very pleasant hike up to the open South Carter Dome summit. The remaining mile up to Carter Dome had quite a number of blowdowns requiring multiple off trail passages.
After dropping down into the notch on rocky Carter Moriah, the long walk out on Wildcat River returned our feet to soft dirt and agreeable grades.
