Comments
Comments: The atvs were in full force in Dixville for 4th of July weekend, or at least on Saturday afternoon. I hiked the Cohos trail up to Dixville peak and saw plenty just in the quarter mile of walking the road near the top. So, I decided to take the long way also to bushwhack Cave and Rice. I made a big loop, getting to the Sang shelter just before dark, heard some fireworks but they didn’t last long. In the morning, I soon hopped into the woods and skirted north around Sanguinary Mtn, and followed a bearing over to Cave; 40 minutes. Descending Cave, the steep thick woods decided to push me west of where I intended to go, but after a quarter mile I corrected and followed a bearing down to the col, crossed the atv road, saw some flagging and followed that for a while and stayed on the same bearing all the way to Rice, on the North side, or up on the ridge. There were waist high ferns for most of it, so I couldn’t see my feet. But I was moving slow anyway in the 80 degree heat and it wasn’t unpleasant taking my time up the gentle grade. To get down I headed due west until I hit the lower logging roads shown on Gaia. The first one looked driveable, but I soon left it to whack to the other one that doesn’t connect, this one was a skidder path but it looked like it saved me half a mile. Then it was a road walk on rte 26 back up through the Notch. About 5 hours from the shelter to the truck, 8.8 miles, or 12 with the Sang trail. After a cool down in the lake, I did Abeniki, it took me 2:20 round trip. I followed Liam’s report, not sure if it’s the proper way but the road by the dam is an open snowmobile corridor, the other ski trails weren’t clear if they are allowed to be walked, some signs said “trail closed” or “stay on the snowmobile trail”, but nothing saying no trespassing except the road right by the resort. Do your own research on their rules.
