a million moths and other little flying thingies attracted to my waist and head lamps. Shut the head lamp down most the night to keep them out of my face. Only spot it was terrible was the flat, lush sections of Monroe. Seemed like a thousand little fly thingies swarmed me at once it was crazy. Nothing biting. |

What an insanely memorable night hike/trail run. Started by encountering the biggest bull moose I've ever seen while driving Mt. Clinton Road at 8:00PM. Sat there and filmed him grazing the sides of the road for ten minutes from very close proximity- 10' at one point. He didn't seem to mind my presence at all. He had a huge rack! Quick work to Eisenhower-all the way to Monroe there was zero wind. Zero. It was eerily calm up there to start the evening.
I met NOBO "Nobody" going up Monroe. He gave me a five minute Greek mythology lesson about the origins of his name (Odysseus). He explained that once his journey is over he will no longer be "Nobody" but will instead be "Storm Catcher". He was surprised I had no name and asked why I hike. On the spot answer was I hike to get away from all the noise and craziness of the modern world we live in. It was an interesting convo under the stars and we parted ways not expecting to meet again as he was stopping at Lakes Hut and I was going to Jewell.
Wind remained calm until Washington summit where it picked up moderately, which felt great. Took some moon pics and summit selfies in the dark and started towards Jefferson/Jewell. Quickly determined I was a fool for planning a 2.5 mile road run at 3ish AM and it was gorgeous on the ridge so I hit Gulfside back to Crawford and started trail running back to Edmands. Descending Washington summit cone I saw an approaching headlamp and called out "Is that Nobody?" It was indeed and he had altered his plan like me and was going to sit on the summit and watch the sunrise. As he hiked by he then said he thought of a trail name for me= "Silent Running", because I am running from all the noise. Also informed me it's a song from Mike and the Mechanics. My first reaction was to internally dismiss it but the chance encounter and the circumstances told me I should keep the name. Upon reviewing the song and it's meaning this morning I think I really like it-so I guess that's me now.
Run was fantastic and uneventful until five minutes from Edmands where I took the worst digger of my life and drove my shoulder directly into a rock with full force and weight behind it. I Screamed "F*CK* about ten times in a row while lying in a pool of dirt and blood from many scrapes, thinking that 1) my shoulder was broken and 2) How ironic that I was the exact opposite of "silent running" at the moment. Assessed that nothing was broken, just properly mangled, and dusted my self off for a quick descent to truck and arduous drive home at 2:30AM whilst in extreme pain.
To quote my friend Dan from just now "I Suppose there's only one way to learn the 'solo night presi running is dangerous' lesson". |
