 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Appalachia parking off route 2 in Randolph was full at 5:45AM. Parked alongside route 2. The line of parked vehicles extended east beyond the Horton Center sign. Not sure how far to the west of the lot that the vehicles parked. Most of the Presidential traverse hikers arrive early and there are some vehicles for hikers staying overnight at the AMC hut and RMC camps. |

 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
On the Randolph Path, Cold Brook is spanned by the Sanders Bridge (one hiker at a time limit) and the Spur Brook crossing is easy on rocks. The Spur Brook crossing on the Spur Trail is easy on rocks.
Most, if not all, of the drainages are dry. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trails in good condition. The Randolph Path was better than I expected since portions of this trail receive less foot traffic. There is one blow down above the Randolph Path uphill from the Perch that has been delimbed, so it is easy to walk under. I seem to remember another blow down on the Spur Trail uphill from Crag Camp that was no trouble getting by.
The alpine warning sign on the Spur Trail has faded lettering (appears as pale yellow).
There are new RMC signs at the Randolph Path / Israel Ridge Path upper junction. Some of the WMNF signs that are unpainted were harder to read as they are worn. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Fine for dogs. The dogs that have paws sensitive to abrasive surfaces may have trouble on the coarse rock surfaces on the boulders of the summit cones. Not much water above tree line. |
|
 | Bugs: |
Not bad. The most insects were flying about at the summit of Mt Adams. |

 | Comments: |
I saw only two other hikers from the trailhead up to Edmands Col. Once on the Gulfside Trail there was a crowd of hikers. On descent via the Spur Trail, I met only a few other hikers who were mainly visiting or staying at Crag Camp.
The trails had mainly dry surfaces. The few muddy spots were minimal in size and frequently had rocks to step on.
Great views from anywhere above tree line as well at Knight's Castle, Crag outlook, and lower Crag outlook.
The cascades on Spur brook and Chandler Fall were pretty but the water flow is low.
The summits of the northern Presidential peaks are marked by a bolt (no USGS plate). |
