 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
There was ample room for more cars at Ferncroft, both at 7am and 5pm, but of course this was midweek. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail |

 | Recommended Equipment: |

|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
The only real crossing of note on this route is the one a couple of miles from the bottom of Dicey's Mill. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
In general, the trails are in good shape along the route. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
None today on this route. I imagine some of the steep ledge climbs high up on Blueberry Ledge would be impassable for some or most dogs, requiring human assistance. For a dog, taking McCrillis up to Whiteface might be better. |
|
 | Bugs: |
The start was cool (~50 F), so I didn't apply any bug juice. I did get one mosquito on my arm, and she paid dearly for that assault on me. Otherwise, it was a no DEET day despite there being no breeze to speak of. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
I noted a light, rolled up sleeping bag and a pair of yellow frame sunglasses at the kiosk by the parking area. |

 | Comments: |
Water flow was quite low, so the crossing easily done easily by rock hops perhaps 50 feet upstream of the birch log mentioned in nearly every report on this trail. After crossing, I noted that rock hopping could have been done just to the downstream side of that log. The log itself has changed over the last decade or more. Its bark is gone, and it has a pronounced sag to it. Still, it remains solid and is useful when water is running high. A smaller diameter log lies alongside the bigger one for much of its length, perhaps useful to those whose sense of balance isn't what it was years ago (like mine).
I did note that in at least one place along Rollins, the narrow trail is right at the edge of a very steep dropoff. I imagine that in time a piece of trail like this will be so eroded as to be impassable, and a short reroute will be needed.
Nice outing with the OTHH, with four different groups of us starting at different times, some doing just Whiteface and the rest bagging both peaks. Two of us are working on our "over 80" rounds and needed both peaks. |
