Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: small streams easy to cross. Significant "water crossings" across failing bog bridges on Kilkenny Ridge Trail at Kilback Pond.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Unknown Pond North - two small downed trees, one close to trailhead, both easily stepped over. Kilkenny between Unknown Pond and Roger's Ledge - several significant bog crossings with sketchy, underwater, or completely missing bridges. There were a lot of new bridges which were great, but the missing/damaged ones created some sketchy situations.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Several good boys along this route and catching a cool-down at the pond.
Bugs
Bugs: surprisingly few, some mosquitoes, but I had forgotten bug spray (!) and came home with no bug bites

Comments
Comments: Overnight backpack, starting at Unknown Pond North and staying at the Unknown Pond tentsite. Had it to myself. Five campsites, two campfire areas, a privy, and a bear box. Height of luxury! Pond is water source. Unknown Pond trail is in good shape, easy footing. Kilkenny Trail from there to the Horn also in good shape. I took the leftmost trail at top of the spur to avoid rock scrambling. On day 2, hiked Kilkenny Ridge Trail the other direction to Roger's Ledge which is simply spectacular. Be aware: the hike from the pond to the ledge requires passage across an extensive bog area. The most important bridges there are sketchy or even missing, making for tricky passage, with seemingly bottomless mud on either side awaiting the hapless hiker. Even so, I did make it through more or less dry-footed, and back again. Maybe do this route in drought conditions.... All told, though, a beautiful and serene place to camp. Lots of moose scat on all the trails, but never saw one.
