This was much easier than expected, 4.2 miles, 1300 feet or so and only took me 2.5 hours total. First I drove further up the dirt road (just after the bridge on 16) but the whole other side of the mountain looked logged off. So I parked at 1600’ about a mile in and immediately found an obvious old skid road that I took about halfway up, through hardwoods. It was soon obvious I was on a ridge which dropped off steeply to the right, and the woods were better the closer I got to this edge. I found remains of a dead moose. I climbed a tree over some cliff areas to get a better view over the lake. (Might not be necessary without leaves). The woods transitioned to mostly softwood, and remained fairly open all the way to the jar on the obvious summit. I took the same route back. The grade was very moderate on this hike and though I did hit a few brief thick spots of undergrowth, it can mostly be avoided, just stay close to the lake side of the ridge. I stuck to a bearing on the lower part to avoid going off course where other skid paths branch off. This peak is on the NH500 highest and Firetower list, but never had a tower, it was only proposed. |
