 | Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant |

|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
First and third easy to rock hop; never saw second (unintentionally bypassed first and second; found first but not second on my way back and checked out crossing) |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Lots of mud between North and South Twin especially closer to South; some of it quite deep; maybe could use a boardwalk? Spur is also quite overgrown with fir trees making trail quite narrow especially closer to South Twin as I remember. |

North Twin Trail was 99% dry with just a couple small patches of mud which were easy to rock hop. I missed water crossings and unintentionally stayed on bypass to third crossing. Found first crossing on the way back. It’s not marked and the blaze on the opposite side of the river is very worn and not visible from the east side of the river. Bottom line- it’s much easier to follow the bypass than find the first and second crossings. Third crossing is at about 2 miles whether you take the bypass or do the crossings. The Trail is relatively easy until it starts to climb at about 2850’ and gets steeper at about 3500-3600’ and 3.5 miles. First great view is on the left at about 4700’. View is to the East and there’s a great view of the Presidentials, Tom, Field, Willey, Passaconaway, Carrigain, South Twin and many more. Once at the junction with the Spur Trail, take a path to the right and have a gorgeous view out to the Pemigewasset Wilderness- Owl’s head, Franconia Ridge, Garfield, Galehead, and the hut. North Twin Spur has a couple short ledge scrambles as you initially descend to the col which were tougher to get down than climb back up on the way back. After that it’s a gradual climb up to South Twin. Lots of mud as you approach South Twin- most of it easy to rock hop and some quite deep. At the top of South Twin there are 360 degree views- some of the best in the Whites in my opinion! |
