Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Moat Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Moat Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, August 6, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: One of only a few cars at Diana's Baths at 7:30. When I got back around 1:30, predictably, the place was a mob scene with people everywhere and cars lining up to get in.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water is very low everywhere. No issues with crossings.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Between the Red Ridge Trail and Attitash Trail junctions, Moat Mtn. Trail appears to have no blazes. The blazes that do exist elsewhere are faded. Lots of erosion on the immediate steep climb away from Attitash Trail. Unfortunately, Moat Mtn. Trail comes from an era where sustainability wasn't yet a thing and trail builders went straight up the side of the mountain, steepness be damned.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes were pretty terrible at lower elevations.

Comments
Comments: My original plan was to hike up to North Moat then bushwhack over to Big Attitash for an unconventional loop; I'd done the bushwhack part before in the opposite direction. However, my breathing was taking a hit from the humidity and wildfire smoke, so I bailed on the bushwhack idea and did a simple out-and-back.

Super smoky views today though still beautiful. I was surprised to not see anyone else up here. I had the ascent, summit stay, and descent all to myself.

On the way up I had to pause for three protective grouse who eventually let me continue along their trail.
