I counted 11 blowdowns on the footpath/logging road portion (after the forest road section) on Shelburne Trail. The few blazes I saw were barely visible. On Kenduskeag, the major issue is overgrowth. Past the ledge knob with the great view, the scrubby ledge sections are overgrown, and the same applies to the final flat run along the summit ridge; I had to duck and watch my eyes through here. The eroded pitch above the ladder is more washed out. From the summit cairn, a path has been worn to a SE-facing ledge, destroying fragile sub-alpine vegetation in the process. :( |

A revisit to Shelburne Moriah for a personal goal and to do some trail checking for the next White Mountain Guide.
The forest road part of Shelburne Trail is more brushy than last time I was here. Way more. A brush hog in this section would do wonders. Higher up on the trail there were still some goopy mud pits despite the dry conditions.
Super views along the ridge as always, especially from the off-trail ledge knob, which overlooks the entire Wild River Wilderness.
Great to meet former AMC cartographer Larry Garland as I was leaving the summit. We had a half hour conversation up there. He caught up to me on the way down and we walked out together for the last two miles. |
