Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of Bumpus Brook on the Howker Ridge Trail was easy on rocks. The crossing of Snyder Brook on the Watson Path was on dry rocks as the water in the pool below Duck Fall went under the rocks. The crossing of Snyder Brook on the Kelton Trail was easy on a large dry ledge and rocks. In high water, these crossings may be difficult.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails are generally in good condition. Some nice rock steps on the Kelton Trail. There were some tree falls that were high above the surface to allow for easy passage (at least 5.5' above ground). The Howker Ridge Trail has some encroachment by vegetation especially around the second Howk. The bog bridges near the beginning of the Howker Ridge Trail are holding up well. Only one log completely damaged.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for most dogs. Some ledges on Howker Ridge may require owner assistance. Rocks above timberline may be abrasive to dog paws.
Bugs
Bugs: Nothing of note.

Comments
Comments: The footing was great due to the dry surfaces.
The dwarf birches at high elevations have golden leaves.
The waterfalls had meager water flows.
No bear was in the Bear Pit.
Superb views from all open areas. If you are hiking on the Kelton Trail, be sure to take a few extra steps on the Inlook Trail to the ledges of the Upper Inlook to get a great view up to the high peaks.
I encountered no other hikers until I was almost to the summit whereupon I met Heather from Randolph NH. There were about a half dozen hiker at the summit including Rob from Brookline NH.
