This is a good hike to take in dry conditions. I used summitsmarts.com for trip planning. River crossings and trail mud were all quite easy. Water levels are low on the Rattle River and although there were a few muddy spots on the trail, it's not enough to have a problem with. Saw mostly AT thru-hikers, working their way up to Katahdin before winter. This is an excellent hike that you have to earn (elevation gain) the views for. The Rattle River Trail isn't hard until you get closer to the junction with the Kenduskeag Trail where it gets steep. The Kenduskeag Trail is overgrown but manageable. Once you get the the ridge, you get views for much of the time and almost 360-degree views at the top. Go a little past the peak to get views in the northeasterly direction from a ledge. |
