Working on the NEHH so folks don’t always post about the ones less traveled. Took York Pond to Kilkenny Ridge Trail. Leaf litter and recent rain made some slicker and muddy conditions on the lower end. You are walking along a brook and crossing water (minor) within the first mile and a half. Plank walking on the lower end - most are in good shape but a couple are rotted and move (like a see saw) when you step on them. Trail in great condition for the 4 miles or so up to Weeks. The orientation of the ascent up to Weeks, coupled with the dense canopy, does not allow much sunlight to penetrate onto the trail. As a result, you have a lot of moss, even in a drier summer, blanketing many trail rocks in this section. You have a lot of roots as well. It opens up and dries out towards Weeks. Lots of Fern!!!! From Weeks down to 3200 feet in elevation or so you venture towards Middle Weeks with a few blowdowns to deal with. You can navigate around or over them but would not take much to get those cleaned up. Still, a heck of a lot better than going over to The Bulge earlier this summer. Middle Weeks over to South Weeks is exposed to sunlight and you get some viewpoints. Trail much drier BUT it does narrow down quite a bit and gets crowded out more so heading up to South Weeks. In this stretch you lose your feet in parts so you really have to watch the trail even more closely to avoid surprises as there are a couple of small rocks with moss starting to emerge from evolving trail erosion. I hit the same one twice (like 3 inches of smooth moss covered rock) on ascent/descent of South Weeks. It is right near a large sawed up blowdown.
Nice workout and a great day to be in the woods. Lots of partridge kicking around today. |
