Comments
Comments: We hiked a loop (up Crawford, down Edmands, with the road walk at the end). For comparison, the 4000 Footer book (3rd edition, Steve Smith and Mike Dickerman, page 64) shows the out and back via Crawford path is 9.6 miles with 3350’ of gain. If you have a car spot you can hike the traverse (7.6 miles, 2964’ of gain). The loop we hiked, with the road walk, was 9.8 miles, 3005’ of gain. We only saw 5 cars during the road walk (and only one was ripping down Mt Clinton Road). I would definitely recommend this route, with or without a car spot!
Note that there is a discrepancy between what is posted at the trailheads, about the statewide burn ban, and the actual statewide burn ban. The latter states that “it shall be unlawful for any person in the State to …smoking a pipe, cigar and/or cigarette outdoors in or near woodlands, or on public trails.” ( DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL & CULTURAL RESOURCES DIVISION OF FORESTS & LANDS, dated 9/21/25. You can find this document on social media or on the state website). At the trailheads, the USFS paperwork is not stating that smoking is prohibited.
I talked to a couple from Maine that were smoking on the Eisenhower summit. They didn’t appear to know that there is a wildfire risk or a burn ban. They seemed to appreciate the information. Once I was back at the trailhead I noticed the discrepancy.
Hopefully once the government is funded, this discrepancy can be fixed.
