Comments: What a ridiculously beautiful day to mark this one off for Fire Towers and NHHH/500. The old trail is very easy to follow, even with leaf litter well past the hairpin turn. A few patches of thick - lots of smaller scrappy stuff down low - and then you're in a meadow of sorts. Although the colors were not as vibrant as years past, standing in that meadow, surrounded by mountains, with not even a slight breeze was unbelieveable...am I turning into a views person? Quite fun to pick out landmarks such as Stairs, Attitash, Chocorua, other peaks.

We did not shoot straight to the fire tower, but contoured around a bit before heading up. Lost the old trail a few times in the thick, but like others, quickly found it again. When going from the fire tower to the summit, head off from the drum that is laying on it's side. Don't do what I did and take the scenic route all the way around the tower just to end up in a circle -- but if you do, beware that glass from the cab is half buried in the ground about 10 feet below the tower. It is intact, for now. Easy trek over to the summit, and back out we went. Same periodic thick stuff and off our track, just a little in a few spots, but we did make use of that and followed a drainage that was likely part of the route of whomever laid the telephone/telegraph wire (as evidenced by said wire), for a short bit and then cut back in. It seemed to have cut off some distance and was ultimately easier. Just don't follow it too long, or you will end up too low. Hit random bits of wire on the way out, but nothing sharp.
