BIG big day. Started just as the sun was coming up and finished just as it was about to set. I’m so glad I did these in the order I did- Bridle was quiet for most of the way up in the early AM and Lafayette wasn’t mobbed (yet) so I got to enjoy the views without too much traffic at the start of the ridge. **Greenleaf’s well is dry! Plan accordingly!** It was unseasonably hot and sunny on the ridge, and I didn’t bother counting people- every single person in the state of New Hampshire was out. Foliage is maybe a little past peak but still completely gorgeous. The trail is in great shape and is well marked for fragile areas to avoid.
I got over Little Haystack and it was like night and day- comparatively no people on the ridge below the treeline. I hiked across Liberty and Flume and doubled back over Liberty to descend Liberty Springs. Campsite reports 7 days since their last bear encounter. The spring is at a trickle but it is running, and I got some much needed water after sucking it down in the sun.
Today I marked the tallest mountain I’ve climbed yet, as well as the most elevation and distance I’ve done in a single day. This hike was phenomenally beautiful, and I feel so grateful to be alive and have a body capable of carrying me up and over this land. |
