 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
All of these trails were in good shape overall. I had a saw with me today so I took the liberty of removing a few small blowdowns. Blazing on Martha's Mile is faded. Signage along the ridge is still ok but should be updated to current USFS standards when replaced. The sign at the N end of Martha's Mile is in a strange spot. Instead of at the true summit of Owlshead where the trail begins/ends, its further down just above the upper scramble. That scramble is getting trickier as there is now lots of trail creep and erosion from people going around the top of it. The Martha's Mile sign at the summit of Martha was also obscured by tree branches so I did a bit of trimming there to make it visible again. |

This isn't the shortest approach to these summits but the grades are gentle, footing is easy, and the walk along the Cherry Mtn. ridgecrest is just lovely.
Ground conditions were dry to damp from melting frost/snow. Snow was patchy and was along the ridge. No need for traction at this point. The upper scramble on Owlshead was wet and took some care. Another ledge near the summit looked deceptively dry but was slippery.
A gorgeous day out there. The northern Presedentials are looking pretty wintry right now. Good to see Tammy, Denise, and their two pups on Martha's Mile! |
