 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
We drove the spur road that diverges from Little Dead Diamond Rd to the north of Little Dead Diamond River as far as we could, which wasn't very far (less than 0.5 miles) before we hit a washout section in a logging landing. Maybe high clearance could get past this, but not mid. Some rough stretched of the road to the west of this point at well. Roads were all good until this spur road. |

With the big rut early on Pisgah Mtn Trail, approaching this peak from the north didn't seem easy. I was pretty excited when I saw a decent looking logging road going nearly to the summit from the south on satellite imagery and elected to try a southern approach. I also considered an approach following up Tracy Brook from the bend in Little Dead Diamond Rd, but couldn't pass up a logging road where I could see dirt!
Anyways, we walked the spur road W/NW and ended up overshooting my nice logging road. We started up to the west of the drainage (when we should have been to the east), but the conditions were still OK. Followed some logging road then spent awhile in wet areas contouring around 2200 still on the west side of the drainage. This turned into good woods once we finally started ascending again. Found the summit without problem.
Descending, we aimed to the east of the drainage and quickly found my road. It wasn't a perfect as I hoped, but easy to follow and definitely the right way to do this peak. The logging road may not look too appealing from the spur road, but it's worth it. It starts at the last landing to the east of the drainage. If you cross the drainage on the spur road, you've gone to far.
1:50 round trip, 1:05 up, 45 mins down |
