—every hiker tired of shoulder season
Double header today to take advantage of the near-perfect weather and finish off my Presidential Range for October! As expected, the trail to about 3000 feet was bereft of ice and snow, However the trees were beautifully laden, and gave all of us a sneak peek at what is to come. Consistent ice and snow pack about .4 miles before the intersection of Crawford and Webster Cliff Trail, but with the warming trend the ice was soft enough in the morning to bareboot to the junction. Ran into Bitches-on-Ridges at the overlook, as well as a few more gridders who gave me the low-down on the trail to Ike, and on their advice donned my Hillsounds, which proved to be the right choice all the way to the summit of Eisenhower. Be aware that the ice/snow coverage isn’t perfect, so rock spikes are the right tools for the job. I (and by the looks of it everyone else who made it to the summit of Ike) discovered that the drifts were soft and knee deep in spots. Ask me how I know đź«  Shout out to Skylar, who took my summit picture, and also stated that Edmunds Path didn’t have any drifts. The afternoon hike back to Pierce and back to the trailhead was…WET. Like a river runs through it wet. I regretted not bringing plastic bags as I changed my socks TWICE. For anyone going out tomorrow, waterproof socks would be my advice! If you’re out there before sunrise, most of that water will be ice, so bring those spikes!
