Starting at the Rt 113 trailhead for the Haystack Notch trail, this hike covered all of the Haystack Notch trail followed by an out-and-back on half of the Miles Notch trail. I’d already completed the other half of the Miles Notch trail as part of a previous hike, so no need to cover that section again. To avoid hiking the entirety of the Haystack Notch trail again, I stashed an e-bike at the Haystack/Miles trailhead so that I could bike back to my Rt 113 starting point. I liberally used the throttle on the e-bike for the 17 mile distance.
Most of the Haystack Notch trail was unmarked with a couple of spots where the trail was hard to see, mainly due to thick leaf cover. The trail conditions improved after exiting the wilderness area. The Miles Notch trail started where Haystack Notch ended - in a large, open area with decent views and no trees. The Miles Notch trail was an easier and much more pleasant hike, although there was nothing difficult about Haystack Notch either. Not much to see on these two trails other than trailside streams. |
