Beautiful day grabbing Garfield for November before the road closes. First half of trail was quick going, mostly dry and the leaves not much of a nuisance. The trail was a bit wet up near the switchbacks, not running like a river but quite damp. Then little patches of ice that turned into more solid chunks on some spots, as well as sneaky hidden patches of black ice. I put my rock spikes on somewhere within the last mile - it may be overkill for some, but when I start thinking about every step to avoid icy spots then thats my sign to put the spikes on. The last push to the summit on the Garfield Ridge Trail will require spikes, pretty good ice forms coming down that steep section - should be okay with rock spikes for now as it's just a short section and you get handholds to help. Summit was windy, exhilarating and beautiful as always. I wore my spikes on the descent a little farther down than where I had put them on, as I like a good hustle down these mountains when I can get it. Saw only one person all day. |
