 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The large fee lot had about half a dozen vehicles at 9:00AM.
One hiker said that he inserted money into the automatic fee machine twice and received no pass. It may be malfunctioning. I used my lifetime pass so I did not the machine.
The outhouse is open.
Mt Clinton Road is open. |

Gibbs Brook crossed by a bridge. All other crossings are small drainages that are no problem |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
One small fallen evergreen extends into the Crawford Connector not far from the trailhead. Easy to get by. A small saw can cut this tree.
One evergreen across the Crawford Path at about 3,700'. Hikers going just off the edge of the trail to get by. About 6" diameter.
Some other trees were either high overhead or alongside the trail. No problem under current conditions. |

 | Comments: |
All sorts of ground conditions. There was very little snow on the trail at the outset of the hike. Soon there is a thin cover of snow and frozen slush. The depth increases with elevation. There are also many stretches with running water with some ice. The snow covers ice capped rocks and an underlying frozen slush substrate. The snow depth is several inches near the tree line with a few minor drift pockets up to a foot deep.
I ascended with no traction without any difficulty. I used an old pair of microspikes on descent as insurance for secure footing.
Snowshoes would be useless at this time.
Many hikers walked the Crawford Path to Mt Eisenhower. Four hikers came up the Edmands Path to Mt Eisenhower before heading to Mt Pierce. One hiker went to Mt Eisenhower, Mt Pierce, and was heading to Mt Jackson when I met him on Mt Pierce.
The evergreens were laden with snow. Good views north up the Presidential Range. The white alpine areas contrasted strikingly against the gray cloud background. No gray jays at the summit but saw them later in the forest. Gibbs Falls had a decent flow of water with no ice shielding the view of the tumbling water.
Two hikers mistakenly ascended the Crawfor Cliff Trail that exits left before the bridge. Be sure to walk across the bridge over Gibbs Brook and then turn left on the Crawford Path (sign about the Mizpah Hut closure is at this intersection). |
