In and out hike from RT 302. Used microspikes the entire hike. 2-3 inches of snow first third, 4-6 inches second third, and 6-8 inches last third. The trail was the usual rocky mess with too little snow on trail to fill in between rocks or cover the wet areas. I carried snowshoes but didn't use them - too rocky and too many wet areas. The ledges and the summit had black ice beneath the snow cover. Crampons vs microspikes would have worked better. I crawled up the last 100 feet to the summit hanging on to the shrubs alongside the ledge. Big wind and no view on top. |
