Comments
Comments: New section of Carter Moriah trail is actually quite nice and easy to follow/well marked. First mile was almost bare then heading to Mount Surprise there were a lot of slippery leaves with a dusting of snow and then icy slabs with a dusting of snow. I did fine barebooting but eventually put my rock spikes on. After Surprise the snow gets a little deeper and it’s hard to tell where the ice or wet spots are. Bog bridges are very slippery with ice and snow. Fell off into slushy mud a couple times. The last mile to the summit has 4-6inchs of fluffy stuff covering big ice bulges that were hard to detect under the snow. My dogs and I were sliding around everywhere. Rock spikes were useless here but I was too lazy to put on my bigger ones. Overall there seems to be a lot less snow over here than other places in the Whites.
