Gorgeous day out there today! Got above the clouds for an amazing undercast and beautiful winter blue skies. Except for the last bit up to the Monroe summit, the temps and winds were very tolerable all day. The summit of Monroe was very windy and cold - extra layers and face protection needed. Got a late start today and the trail was packed out by the time we got going. Snow started right at the TH with a few inches and increased to 2-3' up high. Due to the earlier traffic, we were able to bareboot to the hut. Spikes went on here for the up/down to Monroe summit and stayed on for the descent until a little bit after Gem Pool where they started to ball up considerably so we took them off. Gem Pool crossing had a partial bridge of frozen slush; all the other crossings were open, but crossed on rocks/logs, some snow/ice covered. There are some open drainages up high as well as some black ice on the slabby rock areas so watch your footing. Still too many exposed rocks on the steep stretch above Gem Pool for snowshoes, but above this section they could have been used, as well as up to Monroe summit. Snow through here was semi packed, but soft in spots. With the new snow expected Saturday night, snowshoes will most likely be needed. The trail above the steeps as you emerge from the scrub was off the normal track and meandered a bit, but we stayed with it since it was already tracked out. There were a couple paths tracked out heading up to the summit of Monroe - one going pretty much straight up and one that followed the regular path more closely - take your pick. We were NOT fans of the new re-route on the lower part of Ammo...it has a lot of ups/downs and feels like it meanders twisty / windy unnecessarily through the woods. It is also not blazed and not signed. On the way up we actually stayed on the old trail to Gem Pool which was tracked out. We apparently walked right past the re-route entrance and didn't see it. We got on the re-route on the way down starting at Gem Pool. It joins up with the old Ammo trail below the Cog /Ammo Link junction. Our group has been on this trail many times in all seasons, and we were still a bit puzzled by this new re-route. |
