Comments
Comments: beautiful day in the mountains, respected our turnaround time rather than summit adams, turned around at abigail. Trail below the log cabin (~3200') had snow on it, but only an inch or two. From the log cabin to Gray Knob (~4400') there was 3-6" of snow on the trail, not enough to fully bury the underlying rocks but enough to make it slippery. Snow was loose and dry, so spikes were optional. I never found enough hard ice to wish I had them. Above gray knob, the alpine zone is fully snowshoe territory now. We did not have them, and breaking trail was tiring with many knee-deep drifts. Since even more snow fell since our hike, I definitely wouldn't venture past 4000' ish without snowshoes! We saw several other groups, mostly barebooters or with spikes, nobody else with snowshoes. Apologies for our postholes, the storm last night should have buried them well.
