Comments
Comments: Snowing hard when we started with a few inches of fresh snow on the trail down low. We carried rock spikes and snowshoes, but started off barebooting. Donned snowshoes 0.9 miles in and wore them all the way back to the car (probably should have switched to rock spikes around the same place on the way down, but we were too lazy). We were passed by a trail runner above Avalon who went out to Willey and then hit Tom on his way down. He was moving right along and said that he encountered some deep drifts along the ridge. He had no snowshoes, but obviously had no problem. I personally couldn’t wait to put on snowshoes so I could take advantage of the televators going up Avalon. It was SO NICE! We saw three other hikers heading up as we were exiting. None had snowshoes. Two had on spikes and were planning on hitting Willey. Not sure what the other guy had planned. Either way, if you’re not a bad-ass trail runner, you would probable much happier wearing snowshoes for the bulk of your hike. Don’t forget, the Willey Range always gets way more snow than people expect.
