Parking: The former trailhead on Hardy Country Rd. has been closed and posted with no trespassing signs (although I guess someone keeps removing them), due to people not being cool and leaving trash here. The adjacent parking will eventually be posted. The landowners are asking hikers to park at Sculptured Rocks, then use the snowmobile trail at the back of the lot to reach Hardy Country Rd., then follow the road up to the new trailhead. This adds 0.8 mi. and 340 ft. elevation gain to the hike. As of this report, Hardy Country Rd. has been very recently regraded and is smooth sailing up to the old trailhead. Beyond that point, the road has not been regraded (yet?).
New trailhead: The new Carter-Gibbs trailhead is 0.2 mi. further up Hardy Country Rd. on the right, just before the gate to the old Maxam facility. The entrance to the trail is currently a little obscure but enter the woods at the red property corner blazes and you'll see the first yellow trail blazes. The landowners have the trail sign from the old trailhead and will be installing it here. The new route of the trail follows a 0.1-mi.-ish relocation before turning left onto the old route, then it is the same as before. The closed section of the trail has had its blazes camouflaged.
After meeting with the new (2024) landowners this morning, I walked up and down the trail to grab some GPS tracks. Conditions were mainly dry and bare down low but up higher was a thin layer of crunchy snow. No need for traction today but have the spikes in the bag anyway. The landowners are super nice folks who want people to use their 100 acres as long as they aren't jerks who are leaving trash behind. Completely reasonable! Please respect the privilege of hiking across private land. It's a gift! |
