Comments
Comments: From the parking lot up to the ledges at about the midpoint of the ascent is a mix of dry surface, thin snow, and leaves. The ledges in the middle of the hike had many bare dry rocks interspersed with ice or thin snow. From the top of the ledges to the summit the ice or snow cover was more consistent. No extreme ice bulges.
I did not don the microspikes until I had passed the FPA sign and the dry small brook. The only other hikers I met today put their traction on after the ledges. Traction is definitely recommended at some point on this trail. Even at the summit there was only a thin layer of snow with some bare dry ledge to sit on. I removed the microspikes before ascending the fire tower stairs. Some of the upper stairs had some ice.
The insides of the windows in the fire tower had condensation which had to be wiped in order to see the spectacular views. The best view was toward Mt Washington and Carter Notch. I could clearly see Mt Carrigain but the further western peaks of the White Mountains appeared to have some clouds.
The logbook and functioning pen were on the table. Last time I visited the logbook was not present.
