Our group of three went up Boott Spur to Washington, out to Isolation along Davis Path, and down the Isolation bushwhacks/Rocky Branch.
We started with spikes at Pinkham. Some bits of ice near the waterfall near the turn off for Boott Spur trail, but mostly packed snow. Boott Spur has gotten some action recently and is pretty broken below treeline — we were fine without snowshoes but some of us put them on when we hit treeline. Some drifty bits above treeline combined with pretty windswept stuff. We went back and forth between gratitude and resentment for wearing snowshoes. Eventually we all put on snowshoes to take a diversion from the Lawn Cutoff closer to the top of Tucks to watch the skiiers, as things got a bit driftier. Spikes would have been fine on the upper part of Tuckerman Ravine Trail, but most folks were in snowshoes or crampons, depending where they’d come from before.
From Boott Spur to treeline along the Davis Path was a bit driftier and less firm. Snowshoes definitely appropriate unless this gets much more windswept. The upper below treeline portions of Davis Path were super fun powdery stuff. We passed a group of five snowshoers and the trail is reasonably broken, but snowshoes will continue to be appropriate for a while here. Blowdowns on Davis Path weren’t bad at all — honestly no worse than they are there in the summer. Trail was pretty much a sidewalk from the Iso Express junction, with a bit of fluff churned up from barebooters but no postholes. Thanks to all the snowshoe-wearers who broke out the bushwhacks! We kept snowshoes on until we got to Rocky Branch but iso express and the (corrected) engine hill route are in awesome shape. Rocky Branch was a mix of stream, snow, rock, slush, and dirt, especially below 2500 ft or so. Depending on how much you like your spikes, you could wear them for the top part of Rocky Branch. |
