Wintry conditions for a Fall season hike. I wanted to visit Lonesome Lake Hut for my first time, and have now stopped in at all eight. Met about 15 people on their way down as I ascended, with two left at the hut when I got there - a good sized group for a wintery Saturday night. No one expected for Sunday.
When I first got to Lonesome Lake, I noticed there were tracks across the lake. A couple walked up (along the trail), and showed me pics and videos on their phones of ice skaters who'd been on the frozen lake the day before. Took the trail around, being a solo hiker and unsure how 'in' the ice really is.
Had a good chat with the caretaker, and then saw no one else the remainder of the day, though someone else reached their car right after me later that afternoon.
Spikes went on above the hut and bogs, left on til parking lot at end. Snowshoes went for a ride on my pack (I brought them despite Debra's report from the day before that they weren't needed, since it was snowing lightly all day during my hike). About an inch or two of new powder at higher elevations, drifting a bit in spots, and a little less new snow below.
No problems with the steep chimney above Coppermine Col on KRT, or with the ladders on Hi-Cannon. Both were covered in ice and snow but were manageable with care. Summit tower was very cold and windy. No views at all from the top; decent views of the Franconia Ridge from the lake and hut, though the summits were in the clouds. A great day for hiking! |
