 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plowed, porta-potty, no fee. Behave yourselves it’s a privilege to be allowed to hike through someone’s back yard. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Black, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Drifts |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Bridged by nature and the glorious fallen tree that has provided safe passage for years. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Couple of various leaners, nothing too exciting. This was a business trip for Harlow’s grid but I did take one annoying small guy down on the ledges below Passaconaway (left a small handle for those vertically challenged friends that might need a boost). |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
None today, Jackson stayed home. There were signs of a moose who appeared to have been drunkenly wandering around the Rollins trail. |
|
 | Bugs: |
I’ll tell you what bugs me, the sound of my snowshoes banging off of rocks and the subsequent twisting of my ankles. |
|
 | Lost and Found: |
Nada. |

Bit of type II fun today knocking these out with Lauren and Donna. Snowshoes on almost immediately because of the unconsolidated snow, there’s much more down here than there was on Moose yesterday. Ledges were kinda challenging with the fluff, ice, etc. We took the misery slippers off for this section and put our spikes on. Then snowshoes on for the remainder of the day back to the car. As B’s on R’s so eloquently said yesterday, it’s tough out there because you need them, but the rocks aren’t all covered because there isn’t enough of a base.
We followed 2-3 sets of tracks up to the viewpoint, hopefully the nice fella who submitted the report for yesterday wasn’t shooting for the summit, because there were no tracks beyond that point to the actual summit. Earned a full golden ticket across Rollins Trail. Around Whiteface had the most snow, maybe a foot to knee deep at times.
When we got to the junction of Rollins and Dicey’s we were excited to see one set of tracks but that was short lived and we were back to freshies once those turned off at Walden and we headed to the summit.
Bring your snowshoes, you aren’t gonna love it, but otherwise you’ll look like the roadrunner trying to get traction in the fluff with your spikes. |
